In March 2024, a client called at 10:15 on a Wednesday. The voicemail said they needed 400 engraved stainless steel tags by Friday noon. Normal turnaround for that kind of job is seven to ten days. They had 48 hours. My first words to my assistant were, "We'll take it."

That was my first mistake.

Why I Should Have Asked One Question

We're a small custom engraving shop. For wood and acrylic, our 80W CO2 laser is a workhorse. Third, I'd never make an equipment decision under a 48-hour deadline. Big purchases need time, research, and a clear picture of the demand that justifies them.

Now that I own a fiber laser, I pay more attention to fiber laser updates from the manufacturer. I don't install every firmware version the day it appears, but I don't ignore them either. The controller software on these machines changes faster than you'd expect.
