When you order a custom stainless steel mixing vessel, you're not just buying a tank. Go custom if:

  • Your process involves high-pressure (above 10 bar) or full vacuum
  • You need a special surface finish for cleanability (like Ra < 0.5 µm for pharmaceutical)
  • Your formulation requires a PTFE or glass lining

That last category — the custom-only cases — is real but smaller than most people think. I'd say it's about 15% of the RFQs I see. The rest can be handled by standard vessels with conservative modifications. And for those standard cases, the lead time difference is dramatic: typically 6-12 weeks for custom vs 2-4 weeks for standard + mod.

An Honest Note About RO Water Treatment Systems

I should clarify: my experience is mainly with mixing vessels and the filling side of production lines. RO water treatment systems are a different animal. Those are more about membrane selection, pre-filtration, and flow rates. I've only integrated RO systems into production lines maybe 5 times.
